Discover Sarita's Grill & Cantina

Walking into Sarita's Grill & Cantina feels like stepping into a neighborhood hangout where everyone knows the rhythm of good food and easy conversation. I stopped by on a busy weekday evening at 45653 University Park Dr, Hammond, LA 70401, United States, and the place was humming in that comfortable way diners hope for. Families were sharing plates, students were laughing over chips and salsa, and the staff moved with calm confidence, checking in without hovering. That first impression matters, and here it sets the tone for a relaxed, welcoming meal.

From personal experience, the menu is where this spot really shows its personality. It blends classic Tex-Mex comfort with Cajun-friendly portions that make sense for South Louisiana appetites. On my last visit, I ordered the grilled fajitas, watching the server arrive with that familiar sizzling sound that turns heads across the dining room. The steak was tender, the peppers still had bite, and the seasoning struck a balance that didn’t overpower the meat. Friends at my table went for enchiladas and tacos, and we ended up passing plates around, which says a lot about how shareable the food is.

One thing that stands out is how consistent the kitchen process feels. According to restaurant industry research published by the National Restaurant Association, consistency is one of the top three factors that influence repeat visits, right alongside service and cleanliness. That tracks here. I’ve eaten at Sarita’s more than once, and the flavors and portion sizes have stayed reliable, which builds trust over time. Even the house salsa tastes the same each visit, fresh and balanced, not watery or overly salty.

The cantina side adds another layer to the experience. Margaritas are mixed to order, not pre-batched, which aligns with best practices recommended by beverage professionals who emphasize freshness and measured pours. You can taste the difference. During a weekend visit, I noticed how bartenders adjusted drinks based on guest preferences, offering salt or no salt, stronger or lighter pours, without making it a big deal. That flexibility keeps the atmosphere friendly rather than transactional.

Reviews from locals often mention the service, and I’d agree that it’s a strong point. Servers tend to explain menu items clearly, especially for first-time guests who may not know the difference between certain sauces or fillings. That kind of guidance reflects practical expertise, helping diners make choices they’ll actually enjoy instead of guessing. It also reduces food waste, something many restaurants are working to improve as awareness grows around sustainability.

Location-wise, being near the university makes this grill and cantina a convenient option for quick lunches and longer dinners alike. Parking is straightforward, and the dining room layout works for both small tables and larger groups. While I haven’t tried every item on the menu, there are still gaps in my experience, particularly with desserts and some of the seafood options, so that’s an honest limitation worth noting.

Overall, this is the kind of place you recommend when someone asks for a casual restaurant with solid food, fair prices, and a welcoming vibe. The combination of dependable cooking methods, attentive service, and a menu that respects tradition while staying approachable makes it easy to see why many Hammond diners keep coming back and leaving positive reviews.

  • Amanda, our server, is so sweet, nice and adorable! She always makes sure we have what we need and is prompt and punctual! At the beginning of the meal my dad said he would like a sweet tea to-go after our meal, we didn’t even have to tell Amanda twice! She was right on the money! The food is great, birria tacos are my favorite and my dad LOVES the nachos supreme! Will 100% be back again! And EVERYONE TIP AMANDA SHES AWESOME!

  • 7-15-2018 - back again and perfect... Lily got us plenty of salsa and chips, for my son who is addicted. And the bartender must be back... because Pina Coladas and beer was flowing. Officially our new favorite Tex-Mex place! 7-8-2018 - Can"t believe it took us this long to return! Food was fantastic so I upped their rating since they provided exactly what I expected, minus a few items. The bartender was on vacation, so no frozen drinks, some of the beer taps were out... so we had soft drinks. Other than refilling them into the same cups, everything else was incredible. We both had the combination fajitas. The chicken, shrimp and especially the steak was top quality and taste. The side order of rice needs a little work as you may not recognize it as Spanish rice. Our waiter did a good job keeping our chips and amsslse filled. It's a little out of the way, but with the trip. With recent issues at all our regular Tex-Mex spots... this may be our new favorite! 9-19-2014 - Great friendly service!. Excellent portions and good quality fajitas. Overall clean dining area with a nice atmosphere. Our son didn't like the child's hamburger... but then it is a Mexican restaurant afterall! We'll definitely be back. Don't forget to "like" my reviews!

  • The spinach chicken was to die for! The chicken was soft and succulent and the spinach on top was sauted to the perfect consistency with a tasty butter garlic sauce. The dish also comes with grilled veggies and seasoned mashed potatoes! It is perfect for those of us who want to eat a lighter healthier meal

  • Decent food. Kinda pricey. They have a thing called happy meal that allowed us to get something not technically on the menu. The waitress was mostly attentive with drinks but we waited forever to get the checks and change back once we paid.

  • It's pretty different than other Mexican restaurants.... You'll know what I mean if you order one of their fajitas (I got the chicken). They used an entire chicken breast cut into strips, and the presentation looked quite different than other places, but man..... It was so delicious. Everything was. The chicken was seasoned so well. I've never had protein seasoned so well from a Mexican restaurant, and also served with generous portions.. This place is definitely unique and isn't like other "copy & paste" Mexican restaurants.... They put a lot of thought into the dishes.

  • Been here twice now and both times I was not disappointed at all. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys Mexican food, well worth the price. I personally recommend the tuna fajitas, it's superb. I would also recommend the margaritas, they are delicious and way better el paso.
